How should I clean my jewellery at home?+
For most gold, platinum and diamond pieces, a soak in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft brush is all that is needed. Rinse and pat dry. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals unless you know the stones can take it. We also offer Silver Cloths, Silver and Jewel Clean Pots to purchase in store and online via our website shop.
Why does white gold need re-plating?+
9ct, 18ct and 14ct white gold is rhodium-plated to give it that bright white colour. The plating gradually wears off over 18–24 months of daily wear, leaving a warmer tone underneath. A re-rhodium plate at our workshop restores the finish — bring the piece in and we'll confirm the price and turnaround before starting. See our repairs service for details.
How do I care for platinum?+
Platinum does not tarnish and develops a soft satin patina with wear that many people prefer to a high polish. If you would rather a mirror finish, we can re-polish it at our workshop — we'll examine the piece and agree the price and turnaround with you first. The metal is not lost when it scratches, only displaced, which is why platinum holds stones so securely.
Which stones need special care?+
Pearls, opals, emeralds and tanzanites are softer or more porous than diamonds — keep them away from ultrasonic cleaners, perfumes and household chemicals, and clean only with a soft damp cloth. Put necklaces on after perfume and hairspray. Pearl strings loosen with wear over time — bring them in and we'll quote the re-stringing before any work begins.
