Dress Rings

Dress rings — also called cocktail rings — are the most personal piece in any jewellery collection. They mark anniversaries, milestones, or simply a Tuesday afternoon. Here's how to choose one that lasts.

Style direction

Cluster rings give maximum visual impact for the carat weight. Cocktail-style with a single statement stone (sapphire, emerald, ruby, opal) is the classic dinner-party ring. Crossover or twist designs are the modern alternative for a softer look.

Centre-stone choice

Sapphires (blue, pink, yellow, teal) are the toughest coloured stone after diamond and ideal for daily wear. Emeralds are softer and require careful handling but reward with unmatched colour. Opals and pearls are dress-ring stones, not daily-wear stones — wear with care.

Setting & metal

Most dress rings are made in 18ct yellow or white gold. The yellow gold tone tends to flatter coloured stones (especially sapphires and rubies). Platinum is over-engineered for a dress ring and adds cost without proportionate durability gain.

Sizing & wearability

Dress rings are typically worn on the right hand, often on the index or middle finger rather than the third. Try-on with the rest of the hand jewellery before committing — proportions matter more than they do for an engagement ring worn alone.

Frequently asked

What is a dress ring?+

A dress ring (also 'cocktail ring' or 'right-hand ring') is a fashion or statement ring not associated with engagement or marriage. It's chosen for personal style, often features a coloured stone, and is typically worn on the right hand.

Are coloured-stone dress rings durable enough for daily wear?+

Sapphires (Mohs 9) and rubies (Mohs 9) are tough enough for daily wear with sensible care. Emeralds (Mohs 7.5-8 with internal fractures), opals (5.5-6.5) and pearls (2.5-4.5) are not — wear them for occasions and store them carefully.

How much should I budget for a dress ring?+

Bespoke cluster rings start around £900 in 18ct gold. Single-stone sapphire cocktail rings start around £1,500 for a 0.75-1.00ct stone. There is no upper limit — important coloured stones can run into five figures.

Can dress rings be re-modelled from inherited jewellery?+

Yes — this is one of the most rewarding bespoke jobs we do. We take stones out of dated mounts (1970s clusters are particularly common) and re-set them into a contemporary design. Allow 6-8 weeks.

Do dress rings come in standard sizes?+

Most stocked dress rings are size N (UK women's average); we re-size up or down by 2 sizes free of charge for any ring purchased from us. Bespoke commissions are made to your exact size.
